Crusading the east coast for campsites, June 24

Posted by Penny Young on Wednesday, June 29, 2011,

We both woke up in the sweaty roof tent with the kind of forced positivity that stems from ‘if I don’t laugh I’m going to cry.’  It was ridiculously hot at 7am and the whole beach was covered in rubbish and feral cats. It’s slow going at the moment. I’m reading blogs and websites and guidebooks about beautiful places to go, but when we get there it doesn’t translate fo...

The first EVER overland border crossing (for us, not mankind.), June 23

Posted by Penny Young on Wednesday, June 29, 2011,

Unfortunately, proceeding with this long talked about road trip meant actually LEAVING the luxury of Doug and Lyn’s place in Singapore – which was a veritable paradise! (Thanks guys!)

So somewhat reluctantly we headed for the Second Link checkpoint into Malaysia. We didn’t really know what to expect – in my mind a thousand things could go wrong; they’d find the stove and ...

Is this Singapore? Or a Finnish Snow Sauna on Steroids?

Posted by Penny Young on Sunday, June 19, 2011,

My body is in a world of confusion. After three days of plunging from the searing, humid heat of the Singapore streets and Hawker markets to the icy refridgeration of its taxis and interior maze-like malls, I think I’m coming down with something. Wow. It's true. We've spent alot of time boiling the kettle for Yorkshire tea and watching Deal or No Deal here in Harwell in the last 8 wks. But being back in England has been FAB. Even for a boyfriend with a duff arm.

It's not what I'd planned for meeting Joe's Mum + Dad for the first time, but when they picked us up from Heathrow 6 days after he'd been attacked by a shark, all I could think to say was 'lovely to meet you, he's your responsibilty now.'

Since then, we've had nothing short of...

Joe arm-wrestles shark in bali.

Posted by Penny Young on Saturday, June 11, 2011,
Being the anxious little thing that I am, I’ve always found mild comfort in the fact that for all the seconds, minutes and hours I’ve spent worrying myself into a mild stupor, convincing myself that disaster (in whatever form) is just around the corner, rarely, if ever, has anything bad actually ever happened to me.

It was based on this realisation (that I’d been wasting time worrying about wasting time) that I decided I should really push my boundaries. And since I sport neither the...

Impressions of Bali

Posted by Penny Young on Friday, June 10, 2011,
Where we went

After 3 months of roughing it around Oz in an un-airconditioned sweat-pit we were clearly gagging for the kind of pseudo luxury Bali is renowned for – relatively cheap but charming spa hotels on cliff tops with infinity pools and foot massages. Yay! So for the first week we stopped up in Uluwatu – the perfect compromise of the Bukit Peninsula's ‘pumping surf’, a chilled resort away from the bintang wearing tattoo festering metropolis of Kuta and a buffet featuring mor...
