Catch up blogs from Poland to France....

Ah, the end is nigh…

We’ve spent the last month burning around Europe visiting friends and hunting for snow. Despite spending a week being fleeced in Switzerland, we were completely unsuccessful on the snow front, but the upside was we did happen to find lots of old friends and catching up with them has been an awesome way to end the trip (boring them to near unconsciousness with our semi drunken travel stories.)

Thus my radio silence on the blogging front is the result of being a ...

The best of all the Maps.

Posted by Penny Young on Thursday, December 8, 2011,
In an after-school-craft-club (some might say ‘art-attack’) kind of way, my cobalt blue 2011 diary looks as though it could belong to a sentimental nine year old girl (perhaps the kind who failed to pass her pen licence, isn’t very neat at cutting and pasting, but who has exceptional accountancy skills for her age).

Even though its spine is being held together with gaffer ta...

Ah, the Swiss.

Posted by Penny Young on Thursday, December 8, 2011,

If you’re getting to the end of a year of travelling and finances are running low, might I suggest that you don’t choose Switzerland as a final destination? It's not just uber expensive, it’s the only place in the world I’ve ever been to where I felt truly impoverish, and even the snazzily dressed homeless people were looking down at me.

On account of having quite a few m...

Our 'Sydney to Munich' friends

Posted by Penny Young on Thursday, December 8, 2011,

Katrin and Tilo were like our 'Agony Aunt' for this entire trip. Whenever we weren’t sure of what to do or how to do it – or whether we’d ever have to pay for any of those Chinese speed camera's that flashed us, we’d drop them a desperate email hoping that their experience driving from Sydney to Munich just a year before us could shed some light and put us at ease.

So of ...

Prague and meeting the real Scott Stevenson

Posted by Penny Young on Thursday, December 8, 2011,

It’s quite strange that we’d only ever met Scott once before - the day that Joe was attacked by a shark. Out of the crowd of bewildered onlookers he was the one who left his breakfast on the table and sprung into action, helping get us to the hospital (he saw the look on my face and knew that I couldn’t handle the situation on my own). Yet despite having only spent a few of th...

Autobarns aren't for Bob

Posted by Penny Young on Thursday, December 8, 2011,

I just want to clear this up – yes you can drive as fast as you like on the autobarn, but Bob prefers to only travel at ninety because he’s old and things make disturbing rattling noises over 95kmph so our autobarn experience really wasn’t that thrilling. What we did realise after a while though was that when a German tells you it only takes 2 hours to get somewhere, multiply ...

Ich Liebe Berlin!!!

Posted by Penny Young on Thursday, December 8, 2011,
I know it’s trendy to say this now, but god Berlin is cool. I bet if all the cool cats who lived in London or New York could sprechen deutsch they’d want to end up here too (I know I would). It’s just so easy here – there are no wanky business types and the streets are lined with cool but affordable cafes and boutiques and little parks with conc...

Poland

Posted by Penny Young on Thursday, December 8, 2011,

I was sitting in the passenger seat fiddling with the GPS, nestling all my road trip necessities (lonely planet, lucas paw paw ointment, cameras, haribo snacks) into their daily positions, when I turned my head to see what Joe was faffing over, and there he was being interviewed by a reporter and a camera crew.

As it happened, Wojtec, the national news weatherman was running a s...
